Mechanical felling wedge

Students at the HTL Hallein technical college for mechanical engineering have developed and produced a mechanical felling wedge that increases safety and efficiency in forestry.
A mechanical felling wedge is an indispensable tool when felling trees, helping to make the felling process safer and more controlled. The main risk when felling is the uncontrolled falling or kickback of the tree - the felling wedge minimises these dangers considerably. At the same time, it contributes to greater efficiency by making the work vibration-free and time-saving. The space requirement and weight of the user-friendly wedge are also extremely low - it is easy to transport and can be used in various terrain and working conditions.

The mechanics inside and the screw connections consist mainly of standardised parts from norelem. The built-in trapezoidal threaded spindle - a threaded spindle with a special trapezoidal thread profile - converts the rotary movement into a linear movement in conjunction with a trapezoidal threaded nut. Thanks to its special geometry, the trapezoidal thread enables efficient power transmission and precise positioning of the wedge. A single-sided axial deep groove ball bearing - a special roller bearing that can support axial loads in one direction - absorbs the forces from the spindle and transfers them to the wedge. Various screws secure the construction; for example, the cover and guard plates are held in place by cylinder head screws with half-round heads.

The felling wedge works according to a tried and tested principle: it is placed in the cut in the felling direction of the tree and operated using an impact wrench or ratchet. Continuous pressure steers the tree in the desired direction, which not only reduces the risk of accidents but also prevents damage to surrounding structures. The special design utilises the natural tensions in the wood to support the felling process. The robust tool is made of high-quality steel and guarantees a long service life and reliability even under the toughest working conditions.
